This afternoon Southern Maryland News Net held a question and answer session with a Calvert County Board of Education Member Joe Chenelly on the incident on a school bus at Dowell Elementary School in Dowell. Here is what we were able to find out. Southern Maryland News Net: It is understood that a 5-year-old kindergartner at Dowell Elementary School was suspended after he brought a toy cap gun onto his school bus Wednesday morning. What is your position on this situation? Joe Chenelly: Obviously, this is troubling news. To be upfront, I have known this student’s family on a personal level for a couple of years. Two of my five children attend Dowell — one in kindergarten. As a Board member, I have to reserve judgment until all the facts of the situation are known, but I am deeply concerned about this. Southern Maryland News Net: What can you tell us about the student’s current status? Joe Chenelly: I understand the family had a meeting with Calvert County Public School staff this afternoon.
