On June 15, at the Holiday Inn Express in Prince Frederick, Emily Kate Beavers, Girl Scout Troop 2552, was awarded the Girl Scout Gold, the highest award presented by the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Emily’s service project consisted of installing and improving 23 Bluebird houses located at Jefferson Patterson Park. She and members of Troop 2552 installed 5 new birdhouses, as well as installing predator exclusion devices on existing birdhouses. One type of barrier was conical sheet metal installed on the post below the birdhouse which prevents raccoons and other wildlife from entering the birdhouses and destroying the eggs and nests. Another barrier consisted of metal flashing around the post, the slippery surface of which prevents predators from climbing. Also, PVC safeguards were installed as snake preventative measures. All of these devices provide a safe environment for the Bluebirds. Additionally, she developed and provided an Environmental Workshop which was presented at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp. Thank you, Emily, for making this possible.  Emily presented each of her Troop Leaders  with a unique afghan, which had a picture of the girls in Troop 2552. Congratulations on making Gold!
