Mark your calendars for the year’s largest block party in Charles County: On Tues., Aug. 6, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) will host National Night Out (NNO) 2013. Sheriff Rex Coffey, the women and men of the CCSO, McGruff the Crime Dog and McGruff’s nephew Scruff, will join residents throughout the county to celebrate the community’s alliance against crime, drugs and violence. “I look forward to National Night Out every year,” said Sheriff Rex Coffey. “We have positive interaction with our community on a daily basis but only during National Night Out do we really see the magnitude of our relationship with the good people in this community.” Many neighborhoods will host block parties with food, games, a CCSO-sponsored coloring contest and other activities while others will light their porch lights to demonstrate their support for NNO. So far, about 150 neighborhoods have registered to participate. Several local businesses have donated money to help the CCSO purchase giveaway items, coloring contest materials, and other NNO-related items. Target – NNO’s national sponsor – Meredith Management in Waldorf, Toyota/Scion of Waldorf and SMECO have each donated $500.
