“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ambassador Lindy Boggs today. Highly respected by members on both sides of the aisle, Ambassador Boggs was a champion for women’s rights during a time when women in Congress were under-represented. She served the people of Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional district for nearly 20 years with tenacity and grace, while lending her voice to the struggle for civil rights and racial and gender equality, following the untimely death of her husband in 1972. The first woman to preside over the Democratic National Convention in 1976, Ambassador Boggs opened doors that can never be closed again. “Out of her lifetime of many great accomplishments, it was clear that her family was the greatest of them all. I join in expressing my condolences to Ambassador Boggs’ surviving children Tommy and Cokie, her grandchildren, her entire family, and to the people of Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional district, which she loved dearly and served with distinction.”
