Joe Chenelly on School Policy on Weapons

I am pleased to report formal, public discussions have finally begun regarding Calvert County’s school policy and procedures on weapons, look-alike weapons and discipline. I made a motion at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting to immediately bring forward Policy 1515 and its associated procedures for a full review. http://bit.ly/1bGo28a Our policy cannot be zero tolerance. School administrators must have the ability to apply common sense to each individual situation. The capacity of the student and the student’s intent must be considered, and the administrator must have authority to react accordingly. Right now, no matter what, the principal is required to hand down a 10-day suspension. That’s bad policy, and I pledge to change it. ‪ Joe Chenelly, Board of Education, Calvert County
