“Today’s vote in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was an important first step to give the President the authority he needs to take decisive action to deter the Assad regime from further use of chemical weapons and degrade its capacity to do so. It is in our national security interest and in the interest of global security to make certain that the consequences of using weapons of mass destruction are absolutely clear to the Assad regime, other nations, and non-state actors that would contemplate their development or deployment. “As the process moves forward in the Senate and House, Congress should authorize limited, but decisive, action that leaves no doubt that the use of such weapons will be met with grave consequences.”
