Henson student earns champion speller title for second year Sydney Christley, an eighth-grade student at Matthew Henson Middle School, earned the title of the county’s top speller for the second consecutive year at the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) 35th annual Spelling Bee held Feb. at 15 at Matthew Henson Middle School. As the county winner, Christley again advances to the National Scripps Spelling Bee scheduled for May 28-30 in Washington D.C. Danielle Williams, a seventh grader from Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, earned second place in the competition, followed by Iliyah Coles, a seventh grader at Theodore G. Davis Middle School, in third place. Additionally, teams from each competing school are awarded points based on student performances during each round. Davis’s team earned first place for their team performance. Along with Iliyah Coles, team members are eighth graders Brieanna Fletcher, Yasmane Osby, Esha Satam and Kathryn Tonucci. Team coaches are Tanya Ansell and Dawn Murphy. As the first-place team winner, the Davis team was awarded a special plaque to display in the school.
