By now you’ve probably noticed that Republicans are having a “field day” highlighting the five-year anniversary of TransCanada’s initial application for the Keystone XL pipeline. The Energy & Commerce Committee, for instance, has put together a GIF-centric look at the project’s journey and held a hearing to mark the occasion. While compelling, none of this should be necessary. This could have been a day to celebrate all the good Keystone has done for hardworking people. Instead, the project continues to gather dust on the president’s desk. Here’s what the contents of that folder look like: • The 20,000 jobs that would be directly created by the construction of the pipeline. • The roughly 830,000 barrels of oil a day the pipeline will deliver to American refineries – representing about half of our imports from the Middle East. • The warnings that China may well take this supply out from under us. • The list of unions who have endorsed the project, along with the list of Democrats who have done so. • The list of bills backing the project that have passed the House with bipartisan support. • The public surveys showing Keystone has broad and growing support.
