The Calvert County Commission for Women is sponsoring both Junior and Senior Division History Fair Awards to honor a remarkable Calvert County woman – Harriet Elizabeth Brown. In 1937, when she was a young (30-year-old) teacher in Calvert County, she successfully sued Calvert County Public Schools for paying African-American teachers only about half of what white teachers were paid. Her equally young (29-year-old) NAACP attorney was Thurgood Marshall, who later became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. We are inviting you to partner with the Commission for Women – and our eight co-sponsors – to encourage Calvert County students to learn more about this local civil rights pioneer and, in the process, submit winning History Fair projects.
