The Department of the Navy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 3, with concurrence from the Maryland Department of the Environment, are beginning a 5-year review of existing Record of Decision documents and ongoing remedial/environmental cleanup actions here. The Navy will submit draft findings of the 5-year review to the EPA and MDE in May, and the final report will be available to the public in December. A 5-year review is required by Section 121 of Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act for remedial actions which result in any hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants remaining at a site at levels that do not allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure. The purpose of the 5-year review is to ensure these remedial actions are providing adequate protection of human health and the environment. The 5-year review will contain information on the following sites: • Site 1, the Fishing Point landfill; • Site 12, Operable Units 1 and 2, the landfill behind the rifle range; • Site 6/6A, Operable Unit 1, the bone yard site; • Site 11 Operable Units 1 and 2, the former and current sanitary landfills; • Site 17, Operable Units 1 and 2, the pesticide shop [...]
