Southern Marylanders Hear Directly From State Superintendent at Common Core Forum By Joe Chenelly Member (1st District) of Calvert County Board of Education Hundreds of concerned and inquisitive residents of Calvert, St. Mary’s and Charles counties converged on Huntingtown High School Monday night, nearly filling the 800-seat auditorium to hear directly from and be heard by State Superintendent of School Dr. Lillian Lowery at the Southern Maryland Common Core Public Forum. Every public school system in Maryland, as well as in 45 other states and the District of Columbia, are implementing the Common Core State Standards, some more quickly than others. The stated goal of Common Core is to produce more college- and career-ready students nationwide. But politically-charged controversy has surrounded Common Core since long before the standards were even published. The forum ran for 90 minutes, with more than half being filled by remarks from Dr. Lowery, Interim Superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools Nancy V. Highsmith, Maryland PTA President Ray Leone, and Steven Van Rees, a learning specialist who works for Calvert County schools.
