Local musicians will perform music spanning genres and generations at a free January Blues Concert on Sunday, January 19, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Parish Hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Prince Frederick, MD. The theme of this year’s concert, “From Dark of Winter to Promise of Spring,” aims to beat the winter blues with an interactive musical experience where attendees can find harmony in sound and spirit. The concept of the January Blues concert originated from music therapist and former resident of Calvert County, Richard Smucker over a decade ago. He brought together fellow musicians, as well as pupils of all ages and abilities, some of whom came from local agencies like the Arc of Southern Maryland and Southern Maryland Community Network, with the chief goal of providing a musical experience that would connect community members and provide inner healing for those that suffered from the winter doldrums. Smucker moved from the area two years ago, but longtime co-collaborators Susan Yoe of Huntingtown and Jennifer Moreland of Lusby decided to re-ignite the annual tradition as part of a Martin Luther King Day community service event.
