On January 19, 2014, Deputy Murphy responded to a residence in Mechanicsville for an assault. The victim alleged suspect Thomas Lee Cromwell, 33, of Mechanicsville, struck the victim in the face with his fists and burned the victim’s forehead with a lit cigarette during an argument. Cromwell then grabbed a juvenile victim by the neck and commenced to swinging the juvenile around. Deputy Murphy observed fresh evidence of injury on both victims. Cromwell was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Cromwell went before a District Court Commissioner Roy G Wetzel, and bail was set at $25,000.00. He was charged with 2nd Degree Assault and Child Abuse – 2nd Degree by Custodian.
