On Friday January 24 the 5th Grade D.A.R.E graduation at the Cardinal Hickey Academy was held. Nineteen 5th Graders celebrated completing the 10 day elementary school “Keepin’ it REAL” curriculum. They were joined by many family and friends. This was the third graduation for DFC Andre Mitchell at the Cardinal Hickey Academy. At the beginning of the graduation ceremony DFC Mitchell held up a small orange cone. He explained to the audience that he told the students that on day one as a police officer he dealt with cones all the time and every time he set up cones it was to direct people to a certain location. DFC Mitchell went on to explain that he showed the students ten cones and each cone would represent one of the ten lessons in the D.A.R.E curriculum. Sometimes when cones are set up, they get kicked down, knocked down or even driven over because people ignore the cones, don’t care about the cones or just simply don’t pay attention to the cones.
