Eight teams from four Charles County Public schools competed in the 2014 College of Southern Maryland Middle School VEX Robotics Challenge held Saturday, January 25, at the La Plata campus. This is the first year that CSM has held a separate VEX event for middle schools in the tri-county area. The challenge is part of CSM’s Institute of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (iSTEM), which provides programs to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM fields. Five CCPS teams qualified to compete in the VEX Robotics Maryland State Championship – middle school event scheduled for March 8. Teams that earn the Excellence, Tournament Champion, Tournament Finalist and Design awards at the regional level automatically advance to the state event. Teams from John Hanson Middle School and Piccowaxen Middle School received the Tournament Champion award and advance to the state level. They also share the award with a team from St. Peter’s School. Members of the Hanson team, team number 9316B, are eighth graders Anthony Aceto, Tyler Cataldo, Hunter Donn, Emily Parent, Joshua Riddle and Chris Rodriguez, and sixth grader Cody Flerlage.
