Discovering Charles County with The Maryland Historical Trust

What do you know about Charles County’s history in the late 1600′s? If you are like most people, probably not much, but thanks to a team from The Maryland Historical Trust and the Charles County Public Library system, an archaeological exhibit focusing on that very subject has been created. The exhibit focuses on two archaeological sites from the County’s early European settlement period. Artifacts found at a Native American site provided context for the exhibit as to how the lives of Native Americans might have been influenced by contact with Europeans. The Posey Site, located on Naval Support Facility South Potomac, was first discovered after an explosion in 1957 revealed evidence of early Indian settlements. Since that time, investigators have recovered more than 11,000 items, including artifacts and animal bones. The exhibit also focuses on the successful search in 2008 for Charles County’s first courthouse. A team of archaeologists from St. Mary’s College of Maryland with support from Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum investigated 66 acres of land south of La Plata.
