On February 18, 2014 at 7:45 am, a fire at 5360 Shady Oak Drive in La Plata was discovered by a neighbor. La Plata, Waldorf, Bel Alton, and Marbury Volunteer Fire Departments responded. The fire started in the 3 car detached wood framed garage. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and was attributed to poor construction of a homemade wood burning stove, which was left unattended. The garage and all of its contents were destroyed as a result of the fire. The estimated loss was $35,000 to the structure and $15,000 to the contents.
