In 2013, St. Mary’s County has faced an increased rate of prescription drug and heroin overdoses. These occurrences cannot be overlooked by our community. Prescription drug abuse is a leading cause to the increasing number of heroin users, and no individual is immune to the threat of an accidental or lethal overdose. For example, year-to-date statistics indicate more than a 6% decrease in pharmaceutical diversion cases and a 58% increase in heroin investigations from 2012 to 2013. Unfortunately, pill and heroin use is increasing in our youths. In order to prevent future cases of overdose, St. Mary’s County is working together to spread knowledge about the risks of prescription drug and heroin use. Parents and families are encouraged to attend the upcoming Drug Summit for Parents at the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department on Friday, March 7th at 6:30pm. The Drug Summit for Parents is organized by The Department of Aging & Human Services in collaboration with several local partners, which include the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO), Health Department, Walden Sierra Behavioral Health, and the Board of Education, in order to raise awareness of the drug abuse in St. Mary’s County.
