The St. Mary’s County Departments of Public Works & Transportation and Emergency Services and Technology have developed a new interactive Geographic Information System (GIS) application to provide extended communication during winter weather events. When severe weather occurs in St. Mary’s County, a computerized system will track the progress of snow removal operations as crews / contractors are dispatched and complete work in their respective Service Areas. Citizens can click on the StormReady icon (located to the left of the SMECO icon) at the bottom of the county home page at http://www.stmarysmd.com/. The link will re-direct users to a webpage which will display the new Service Area Map (similar to the image shown at right). Citizens will be able to type in their address / roadway or simply view the status of snow plowing and treating (salt, sand, etc.) operations along County-maintained roadways. Citizens will be able to utilize a zoom in / out feature to view areas throughout the County. Roads will turn purple as they are treated / plowed.
