Boehner Applauds House Vote Preventing Obama Administration from Gutting Welfare Reform House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement today praising House passage of the Preserving Work Requirements for Welfare Programs Act (H.R. 890) preventing the Obama administration from undoing critical welfare reforms: “Today the House voted to prevent the Obama administration from undermining the work requirement central to helping millions out of poverty. These reforms – which have been in place for 17 years under both Democratic and Republican administrations – have slashed welfare rolls and boosted earnings. By waiving the work requirement, the Obama administration is jeopardizing the success of welfare reform and the future of millions of Americans struggling to find full-time work. “The administration’s actions are also an indication that the president’s economic policies have failed. Yesterday, House Republicans put forth a responsible, balanced budget that will help boost private-sector growth and job creation by addressing the mountain of debt that is weighing on our economy. President Obama and Senate Democrats should follow Republicans’ lead and embrace this common-sense goal of balancing the budget in 10 years to expand opportunity – not government dependence – for all Americans.”
