Archaeology Lectures at HSMC

Get the inside scoop on archaeology at Maryland’s first capital during April, Maryland Archaeology Month. Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC) has scheduled two evenings of illustrated lectures. Both will take place in the HSMC Visitor Center auditorium (18751 Hogaboom Lane). On April 4, Silas Hurry, HSMC curator of collections and archaeology laboratory director, will present Saints Cast in Brass and Molded in Clay: Roman Catholic Religious Artifacts. Find out about the unique religious objects that have been recovered from sites at St. Mary’s City and their significance. On April 25, the archaeology department will host Calvertpalooza, a series of lectures on recent work at the Calvert House site. Timothy Riordan, Ph.D., HSMC chief archaeologist, will discuss the findings from Field School excavations during summer 2012. Learn the latest about the grounds and house that were occupied by Maryland’s first governor and later became the first state house of Maryland. Doctoral candidate Wesley Willoughby will examine evidence of the evolution of the Calvert House from elite manor house to public inn to state house.
