On Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at the Calvert Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), Wilson Freeland, Director of General Services, brought forth a proposal from Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, to name the Children’s Observation Tower in honor of the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School. General Services and the Koenig Private Foundation were both for the dedication to the children of Sandy Hook. Although the Calvert Board of County Commissioners was not against the proposal, they wanted to wait until a more appropriate time. As was pointed out, the tragedy is still too fresh in peoples’ minds so they would prefer to dedicate it in the future. The two story Children’s Observation Tower is presently under construction. Anthony Williams of Built Rite Home Developers, who supplied the labor and materials, asked it to be so named. The tower is part of a multi-year project to create a Children’s Discovery Area & Trail at Annmarie. The BOCC asked Director Freeland to ask Annmarie Garden to furnish a drawing of what the plaque would look like and how it would read for the board’s approval. Margit Miller / Staff Writer / Editor
