On Tuesday, February 5, the Calvert Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) paid tribute to Len Zuza for his leadership of the Southern Maryland Oyster Cultivation Society (SMOCS). The Southern Maryland Oyster Cultivation Society has evolved from a small grassroots effort to a large membership organization working to restore oyster reefs in our local creeks. They have successfully replanted and expanded numerous oyster reefs in and around Calvert County. SMOCS has replanted seven and a half million live oysters since their inception five years ago. The Society has also raised awareness on the ability of oysters to naturally filter pollutants from the waters and restore habitat for shellfish and finfish that are important to the local economy as well as to the quality of life on the Chesapeake Bay. Participating in events like Patuxent River Appreciation Days at the Calvert Marine Museum in October each year, SMOCS has helped to educate the public about the ongoing conservation efforts and sustainability in our communities.
