On Monday, November 25, 2013, Deputy John Davis of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Wal-mart in California for a reported theft in progress. Loss prevention personnel observed a suspect placing food items in a plastic bag and leaving without paying. The suspect fled on foot toward the Checkers when approached by loss prevention. On arrival, Deputy Davis observed a person matching the description provided by loss prevention. The suspect dropped a bag and fled on foot. After a short foot chase, Darius Jamal Ernest Ennis, 20, of no fixed address, was apprehended. Initially, Ennis provided false information regarding his identity. He was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he appeared before District Court Commissioner, Jake T Karaczynski, and was held on a $2,500 bond. Ennis was charged with theft under $100.00, trespass: private property, false statement to police officer, and resisting arrest by Deputy Davis. Three days earlier, on Friday, November 22, 2013, Ennis went before District Court Commissioner, Mary King, for a theft under $100 arrest and was released on his own personal recognizance.
