St. Leonard Elementary School is serious about good behavior on schools busses—and they celebrate it with a sense of humor. As part of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, students earn a “bus mile” when they demonstrate good behavior. Each time a bus earns 40 miles (40 positive trips home and back to school), the school celebrates. Each celebration has a theme, and the first celebration of 2013-2014 was: WE’RE HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY ABOUT YOUR GREAT BUS BEHAVIOR. St. Leonard staff members joined in the event with “Duck Dynasty” inspired costumes. Principal Toni Chapman said, “ the staff members at SLES go to great lengths to encourage positive bus behavior! We love to support our drivers in this way.

In a speech on the House floor today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) took on Senate Democrats for blocking dozens of jobs bills the House has passed this year as part of Republicans’ Plan for Economic Growth & Jobs: “The American people work hard, and they have a right to expect their elected representatives to do the same. House Republicans are listening. To date, the House has passed nearly 150 bills this Congress that the United States Senate has failed to act on. “Many of them would help our economy and boost job creation. Nearly 150 bills passed by this House yet to be acted on by the Senate. These bills would do things like: Increase the supply of American energy & build the Keystone pipeline; Roll back red tape & unnecessary regulations; Provide more flexibility to working families; Reform & improve job training programs; Protect Americans from cyber attacks; Help schools to recruit & keep the best teachers; Delay the individual mandate, allow the American people to keep the health care plans they like; Or to scrap the health care law that’s wreaking havoc on our economy. “Every single one of these bills has been blocked by Washington Democrats. President Obama to Talk Down His Economy

Remember when the president famously said, “Give it to me,” about the economy back it in 2009? Entering his sixth year in office, there’s no doubt that it’s now President Obama’s economy. What is more interesting is that the president himself appears to believe his stewardship has been a failure. This morning, the president is visiting a poor Washington D.C. neighborhood to talk about the economy – or, as it’s been described, to talk down his economy. According to the White House, the president will discuss “growing income inequality and shrinking economic mobility and how they pose a fundamental threat to the American Dream.” The American Dream is certainly more in doubt than in decades, but after more than five years in office, the president has no one to blame but himself. It should be no surprise why his approach has left more Americans struggling to get ahead. The president’s economic policies promote government reliance rather than economic mobility. Rather than tackling income inequality by lifting people up, he’s been fixated on taxing some down. Just look at a few of his policy choices: Rather than promoting school choice for the neediest children, the president has tried to block it. […]

Youngster Named Capitol Police Officer for Day

The annual lighting of the Capitol Christmas Tree is always a special occasion, made all the more special this year because of the participation of Giovanni Gaynor, a first-grader from Colville, WA — the very town where the 88-foot Engelmann spruce was grown. Prior to the lighting ceremony, Giovanni and his parents joined Speaker Boehner in the Capitol for a reception to donate presents to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Giovanni, who pushed the button to light the tree, dreams of becoming a police officer when he grows up.  With that in mind, Speaker Boehner and U.S. Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine named the six year old a junior Capitol Police Officer for a day. Features Lighting of 42-Ft. Crab Pot Tree Santa’s elves are hard at work on Tilghman Island in Talbot County, Maryland, building a giant Christmas tree made entirely with crab pots. The wiry 42-foot tree will anchor the community’s holiday celebration that is scheduled to take place on December 14. A ubiquitous symbol of the waterman’s life, crab pots are plentiful this time of year with crabbing season at an end and oyster season well under way. “A crab pot is a 2-ft. by 2-ft. wire mesh square with a bait box in the middle and funnels on two sides that sits on the bottom of the Bay,” explains Kelley Cox, executive director of the Phillips Wharf Environmental Center, the organization spearheading the celebration. “Crab pots sit on the bottom of the Bay, waiting for crabs to crawl in and get the bait. That’s one of the ways we catch the crabs here on Tilghman.” The idea of a crab pot tree is not exactly original, but it’s a project that seems well suited for Tilghman Islanders. “We have lots of crab pots not being used in the off season,” Cox says. “We decided to stack them together, hang lights on […]
