Reverse Course, Full Steam Ahead
County Administrator among Growing Trend to Claim Community College Degree When St. Mary’s County Administrator Dr. Rebecca Bridgett graduated from McDonough High School she had already accumulated 30 college credits from the College of Southern Maryland. She had received a full-time college waiver during her senior year of high school that allowed her to start her college career early. Although she was born and raised in Southern Maryland, her family had roots in North Carolina and with her sister Melissa already attending college there, she decided to transfer to Campbell University. Through multiple graduate degrees and moves, she never forgot her experience or ties with Southern Maryland and CSM. Bridgett learned about a program called “reverse transfer” that enables students with 30 or more credits at CSM to transfer college and university credits earned elsewhere back to CSM to complete their associate’s degree requirements. “Many students leave community college without a degree. Some transfer their credits toward a bachelor’s degree as Dr. Bridgett did and others transfer their CSM credits but never complete their bachelor’s degree. In both cases, students can use credits they received at four-year institutions to fill in degree requirements for their associate’s degrees,” said CSM Associate Vice […]

Hoyer on the Passing of Former President Nelson Mandela
House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa: “Throughout his life, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela met the purveyors of injustice, intolerance, and racism with an unyielding determination to forge a better and fairer future for his beloved nation. From joining the anti-apartheid movement, the African National Congress, and serving 27 years behind the bars of Robben Island as a political prisoner to his groundbreaking tenure in office and later advocacy on behalf of victims of HIV/AIDS, President Mandela stood ever firm for the principles of justice, democracy, equal rights, and peaceful co-existence. Embracing a strategy of non-violent mass resistance, he helped ushered South Africa out from the shadows of apartheid into a new day of freedom, democracy, and hope. “He will be missed not only by the people of South Africa, with whom I join in mourning their beloved Madiba, but by Americans of every color and faith, including the many who worked tirelessly from afar to call attention to the injustice and brutality of apartheid, to protest his unjust imprisonment, and to boycott the evil system he struggled to overturn. Boehner on the November 2013 Unemployment Report
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement today regarding the Department of Labor’s unemployment report for November 2013: “Today’s report includes positive signs that should discourage calls for more emergency government ‘stimulus.’ Instead, what our economy needs is more pro-growth solutions that get government out of the way. That’s why the House has passed dozens of jobs bills that would help small businesses hire, increase our energy production, rein in red tape, and protect all Americans from the fundamentally-flawed health care law. President Obama ought to take this opportunity Republicans have given him and call on his party’s leaders in the Senate to act on these proposals immediately.” See more at: http://www.speaker.gov/press-release/speaker-boehner-november-2013-unemployment-report#sthash.TLlV7NgR.dpuf

County Attorney John Norris read each of the proposals to the delegation. Also in attendance were the County Administrator, Director of Finance and Budget and the Clerk to the BOCC. For some unknown reason there were few in attendance. Delegate Tony O’Donnell asked the BOCC if the meeting had been advertised and if there was a reason why the department heads with legislative requests were not present, so they would be able to answer questions. O’Donnell said it has been well attended in the past. No one was able to answer why they were not there except for the fact that the Health Department Director, Dr. Laurence Polsky was in training in Baltimore. The second of the legislative proposals, submitted by Dr. Laurence Polsky, was to authorize health departments to retain collected fees for provided services under certain circumstances. This would not apply to licensing fees set forth by the County Government. Delegate O’Donnell asked if this would pertain only […]
