The St. Mary’s County Community Alcohol Coalition, unlike most “Coalitions” that use captains of industry and VIPs from related fields to accomplish goals, welcomes suggestions, ideas and input from a wide variety of area people in its mission to stem the tide of underage drinking, binge drinking in young adults and more. The CAC, which meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Health Connections Building has people from government, health departments, agencies and police, but also students and parents concerned with the problem of underage drinking and illegal alcohol sales to minors. One such student, Mikayla Miles, 13, attending Spring Ridge Middle School has had an unexpected and most welcomed impact on the adults around the CAC meeting room. The straight A student and STEM Academy excelling young lady, Mikayla in short order brought a fresh perspective to the group in the form of letting adults know what kind of messaging gets through to young teens when attempting to get the word out about the CAC program; especially in the area of better implementation and use of social media in CAC’s efforts.
